We build RankBits, so read this with the scepticism a vendor comparison deserves. Then check the numbers: every price below links to its source and the date we checked it. This one has an unusual twist. On the engines both tools share, ziptie.ai is cheaper than RankBits per AI answer, often by two to three times. We will show that arithmetic in full, then explain what RankBits does that ziptie.ai doesn’t, so you can decide whether that difference is worth it to you.
First, which ZipTie? There are two products from the same team, with separate accounts. ZipTie.dev is the original tool, which tracked Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity on credit-based tiers. Its makers say it is "still running" for existing users. ziptie.ai is the newer platform, and it is the one ziptie.dev now redirects to. It tracks seven AI surfaces and uses build-your-own pricing.
Most third-party reviews you will find still describe the old product, and they quote prices that no longer match anything on sale. One April 2026 review lists $179, $299 and $799 tiers. Others quote $69. This article compares RankBits with ziptie.ai as it is sold today, checked on 3 November 2026. ziptie.ai asks to be written in lowercase, so we do that below.

Engine coverage: mostly overlapping, different at the edges
Six AI surfaces are tracked by both tools: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Beyond that, each tool covers things the other doesn’t:
- Only ziptie.ai tracks Bing AI Overview. It also stores the top-10 Google and Bing organic results alongside each AI Overview check, at no extra cost. That lets you see your classic rankings next to your AI answers.
- Only RankBits tracks Claude and Grok. ziptie.ai says no other engines are monitored beyond its seven.
- Only RankBits tracks paid-tier models separately. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude each have a paid-model variant on RankBits Pro. Paid tiers run stronger models with different retrieval, and they often name different brands. That matters if your buyers are professionals who pay for these tools.
- RankBits also queries raw search and retrieval sources: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo search, plus Tavily and Exa. Tavily and Exa are the search APIs that many AI agents and assistants call behind the scenes. These are not AI answers, and we count them separately from the AI engines in the table above.
A correction on our own count. Our pricing page lists 18 engines and sources on Pro. One of them, SuperGrok, is paused on our side at the time of writing, so Pro scans currently run on 17. Grok itself is still tracked.
How each tool captures an answer, and why it matters
This is the most important technical difference between the two tools, and it favours ziptie.ai.
ziptie.ai captures the live consumer products. Its FAQ says answers come from “the live consumer products, not model APIs”, collected logged out and scoped to the project’s country and language. In plain terms, it records what a logged-out visitor in that country would see on chatgpt.com, in Google, or in Copilot.
RankBits uses two methods.
- ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok are queried through each vendor’s developer API with web search switched on. We instruct the model to answer the prompt the way an AI search result would.
- Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Bing Copilot and the classic search engines come from a live search-results data API. That means they are real production results, the same kind of capture ziptie.ai does for those surfaces.
So for the five chat assistants, RankBits measures the model and its search tool rather than the consumer app. The consumer apps add their own layers: memory, personalisation, default model routing and interface-level retrieval. API answers can therefore differ from what a person sees in the app. We chose APIs because they are reproducible, they let us track paid-tier models, and they keep the price at a level where a free plan is possible. But if your question is “what exactly did a logged-out user in Germany see on chatgpt.com today?”, ziptie.ai’s method answers it more directly than ours.
Two smaller differences:
- Sampling. ziptie.ai “captures one answer per prompt and engine in each check cycle” and builds trends across cycles. Its Data Explorer flags whether a gap is “likely a real difference or could be noise”. RankBits also records one answer per prompt and engine per run. But when a result flips compared with the previous run, for example from mentioned to not mentioned, RankBits re-asks the engine up to twice more and keeps the majority answer before recording the change. Both tools are dealing with the same problem: AI answers are non-deterministic.
- Position in the answer. ziptie.ai deliberately doesn’t publish a rank within AI answers, because “order changes between runs”. RankBits records where your brand is first named relative to tracked competitors. We think that is a useful signal when it is averaged over many answers. We agree it is noisy in any single answer.
Pricing: ziptie.ai is cheaper per answer
Here is the part that cuts against us. Both tools ultimately sell the same unit: one prompt, sent to one engine, on one run. ziptie.ai calls it a check, and RankBits calls it a response. Priced per 1,000 of those units:
There is no fudging this. At about one cent per answer, ziptie.ai is roughly 2× cheaper than our subscription allowances and 3× cheaper than our first block of top-up credits.
How ziptie.ai’s price is built. We reverse-engineered the public configurator on ziptie.ai’s pricing page, and every published example matches to within a few cents:
monthly price = (daily prompts × $0.30 + weekly prompts × $0.0429 + monthly prompts × $0.01) × engine multiplier
The engine multiplier rewards breadth slightly: ×1.00 for one engine, ×2.85 for three, ×4.50 for five, ×5.30 for six and ×6.10 for all seven. Add-ons sit on top:
- UGC Impact Analysis: +80% on the prompt price.
- Content Generation: +$20/mo per context.
- API & MCP: +$10/mo.
Paying quarterly, semi-annually or annually takes 5%, 10% or 20% off the prompt price.
The configurator’s minimums are 10 daily, 50 weekly or 100 monthly prompt slots. Each slot is held for its refresh window, even if you pause or delete the prompt after it has been checked.
How RankBits’ price is built. RankBits has a free plan and two paid plans. Your monthly response use is:
responses/month = brands × prompts × engines × runs per month
Free includes 100 responses a month, Starter ($49) 2,400 and Pro ($99) 5,000. Beyond that, you buy credits that never expire.
Four realistic setups, priced on the same engines
To compare like for like, we priced the same work on both tools. The engines are the five or six that both track, so RankBits gets no credit for its extra engines here.
Full arithmetic behind the chart
Shared engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, plus Microsoft Copilot where six are used. Monthly billing, before tax. For RankBits, weekly tracking is taken as 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 runs a month and daily as 30.
- 1 brand, 20 prompts, weekly, 5 engines. ziptie.ai's weekly minimum is 50 slots: 50 × $0.0429 × 4.50 = $9.64. RankBits needs Starter, because Free allows 5 prompts and doesn't include AI Mode or Gemini. That uses 20 × 5 × 4.33 ≈ 433 responses, inside the 2,400 allowance: $49.
- 1 brand, 50 prompts, daily, 6 engines. ziptie.ai: 50 × $0.30 × 5.30 = $79.50. RankBits Pro: 50 × 6 × 30 = 9,000 responses, which is 4,000 over the allowance. 4,000 credits cost $106, for a total of $205.
- 10 brands, 20 prompts each, weekly, 6 engines. ziptie.ai: 200 weekly slots × $0.0429 × 5.30 = $45.43. RankBits Pro: 10 × 20 × 6 × 4.33 ≈ 5,200 responses. That fits the 5,000 allowance in a month with 4 weekly runs and needs a $30 block of 1,000 credits in a 5-run month: $99–$129. Leftover credits carry over.
- 10 brands, 50 prompts each, weekly, 6 engines. ziptie.ai: 500 × $0.0429 × 5.30 = $113.57. ziptie.ai's own published example of this agency setup across all seven engines is $130.72. RankBits Pro: 10 × 50 × 6 × 4.33 ≈ 13,000 responses, which is 8,000 over. 8,000 credits cost $183, for a total of $282.
ziptie.ai's annual billing would lower its figures by a further 20%. RankBits currently has no annual discount.
So if all you need is the six shared engines, at volume, with daily or weekly tracking, ziptie.ai is the cheaper tool, clearly. We would rather say that here than have you work it out after buying.
The RankBits price case rests on different things:
- Free is actually $0. One brand on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Google Search and Bing, tracked weekly, forever. ziptie.ai’s cheapest option is a 7-day trial that doesn’t renew, and paid subscriptions aren’t refunded.
- The API is included. On ziptie.ai, API and MCP access is a $10/mo add-on. On RankBits it is part of every plan, including Free.
- Engines you can’t buy on ziptie.ai at any price: Claude, Grok and paid-tier models. If you need those, the per-answer comparison above stops mattering.
The dial that matters most on both tools is engine count. On RankBits, cost scales directly with engines. On ziptie.ai it scales almost directly, from ×1.00 for one engine to ×6.10 for seven. Before buying either, check which engines your customers actually use. Our prompt research guide covers how to find out.
Where ziptie.ai genuinely wins
If you only read one section to judge how far to trust the rest, read this one.
- Price per answer. As shown above, roughly 2–3× cheaper at the unit level, with no overage charges.
- What it measures. Logged-out captures of the consumer products, per country, rather than developer APIs. If your stakeholders ask “is this what customers really see?”, ziptie.ai has the stronger answer for the chat assistants.
- Country and language targeting. Each project targets one country, and the FAQ says nearly every country is supported except China. Language applies to the Google and Bing surfaces. RankBits has no country targeting at all.
- Teams and clients. Unlimited seats, projects and competitors on every plan. There are four roles, including a Guest role that lets a client see their own project read-only. SSO over SAML 2.0 or OpenID Connect and SCIM provisioning are available on request. RankBits has one login per account.
- Agency reporting. A white-label client report: a PDF with your logo, your client’s logo and your accent colour, the full dataset in Excel, and an AI-drafted summary you approve. It can be emailed on a weekly or monthly schedule. RankBits has exports and public links, but no white-label report.
- Google Search Console. A read-only connection that matches Search Console queries to your monitored prompts, with up to about 16 months of history on paid plans. RankBits has no Search Console integration.
- Methodology transparency. ziptie.ai publishes its metric formulas, including the AI Success Score, and its own limitations: no prompt-volume data, model-based intent labels with no measured accuracy, and no position rank. That is unusually candid, and we respect it.
- Bing AI Overview and organic context. One extra surface, plus top-10 Google and Bing organic results captured with every AI Overview check.
- Reddit and YouTube analysis. The UGC Impact Analysis add-on reads cited Reddit threads and YouTube videos and ranks the community platforms that shape AI answers.
- Track record. The team behind ZipTie, the founders of the technical SEO agency Onely according to third-party reviews, were among the first to track Google AI Overviews. They have been at this longer than we have.
Where RankBits genuinely wins
- A free plan that doesn’t expire. You can measure one brand weekly at $0 for as long as you like, and see a public report before spending anything. You can also run a one-off check with no account at all using the free AI visibility checker.
- Claude, Grok and paid-tier models. Claude and Grok are on Starter. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude paid-tier variants are on Pro. None of these are available on ziptie.ai.
- Classic search and agent retrieval sources. Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo search, plus Tavily and Exa. These show where AI agents find sources, not only where chat apps cite them.
- API and MCP on every plan. You get a REST API and an MCP server, so you can run and read scans from Claude, Cursor or your own scripts, including on the Free plan after email verification. On ziptie.ai this is a paid add-on and isn’t available during the trial.
- “Run now”. On Starter and Pro you can trigger a scan on demand, for example right after publishing a page. ziptie.ai’s FAQ states there is no “run a check now” button. Its checks run on schedule only, and a new prompt is checked immediately when added.
- Position in the answer. RankBits records how early your brand is named relative to competitors. ziptie.ai doesn’t report a rank within AI answers.
- Sentiment and answer-accuracy checks with no setup. Every answer that names your brand gets a sentiment label. It is also checked against your own website for factual errors, such as wrong pricing, features or availability. ziptie.ai offers similar answer-accuracy checks on paid plans, but you first register up to 15 facts by hand.
- From finding to fix. Pro includes an AI action plan that ranks the prompts where you are invisible. It uses AI-estimated search volumes, which are estimates rather than measured demand. RankBits can then draft an article for a recommendation. Each draft uses 5 responses from your allowance, and paid plans get the full text and downloads. On ziptie.ai, content generation is a separate add-on at $20/mo per context.
- Public reports that need no login. Every scan can be shared as a public report page. ziptie.ai’s share links stop working once the export is 14 days old.
Honest limitations of RankBits
RankBits is a young, bootstrapped tool. Several of the gaps below are exactly where ziptie.ai is strong.
- More expensive per answer. See the pricing section. If you only need the shared engines at volume, you will pay more with us.
- API capture for chat assistants. Our ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok results come from developer APIs with web search, not from the consumer apps. They are reproducible and comparable over time, but they are not a logged-out screenshot of chatgpt.com.
- No country or language targeting. If you need to know how you appear in Germany versus Austria, we can’t tell you.
- One login per account. There are no team seats, roles, client guest access or SSO. Public report links cover a lot of client sharing, but not access control.
- No white-label reports and no Search Console integration.
- The response allowance is the real ceiling. Pro’s brand count is unlimited, but its 5,000 responses are not. Daily tracking of one brand on 6 engines with 50 prompts needs 9,000 responses a month, nearly double the allowance. Plan your prompts and engines deliberately, or budget for credits.
- No public review history. You can’t check our claims against a body of independent customer reviews yet. That is a fair reason for caution.
Who should buy which
| Choose ziptie.ai if… | Choose RankBits if… |
|---|---|
| You need the six mainstream surfaces at the lowest price per answer | You want to start at $0 and stay there until tracking proves its value |
| You need results per country, or captures of the logged-out consumer apps | You need Claude, Grok or paid-tier ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude |
| You're an agency that needs team seats, client guest logins and scheduled white-label PDFs | You want API and MCP access without an add-on, including on Free |
| You want Search Console data next to your AI answers | You want to re-run a scan on demand after you ship a change |
| You track hundreds or thousands of prompts monthly or weekly | You want sentiment, answer-accuracy checks and article drafts built in |
| Your procurement needs SSO/SCIM | You want to see where agent search APIs such as Tavily and Exa find your brand |
Bottom line
ziptie.ai is a well-built, transparent tool. On the six engines both tools share, it is cheaper per answer than RankBits by a wide margin. If your needs are covered by ChatGPT, Google’s AI surfaces, Perplexity and Copilot, and you value per-country consumer-app captures, team seats and white-label reports, it is a strong choice, and we would tell a friend to look at it.
RankBits makes sense for a different set of needs:
- You want to start free and keep a brand on a free plan indefinitely.
- You need Claude, Grok or paid-tier models.
- You want an API and MCP server included rather than sold as an add-on.
- You want on-demand re-runs, position-in-answer tracking, and automatic sentiment and accuracy checks without setup.
Whichever you pick, start by listing the engines your customers use. That one decision drives the cost on both tools more than anything else.
