We build RankBits, so read this comparison with the scepticism a vendor comparison deserves. Then check the numbers: every price below links to its source and the date we checked it.
The most useful thing to know about Ahrefs Brand Radar is that it is two products sold under one name:
- The AI Visibility Index is a research database. Ahrefs runs more than 525 million prompts, derived from its keyword database, through AI platforms every month and stores the answers. You can then look up how any brand, competitor or category appears, with no setup. It costs from $199/mo per platform, or $699/mo for all of them.
- Custom prompts track the questions you define, on the schedule you choose. Packages start at $50/mo, and paid Ahrefs plans include a small quota for free.
RankBits only does the second thing. So the honest comparison has two halves, and they come out differently:
- Against the Index, there is no fair price comparison. RankBits has nothing like a 525-million-prompt dataset.
- Against custom prompts, Ahrefs costs about the same as RankBits at small scale, and less at volume. RankBits wins on a free plan, cheaper Claude tracking, extra engines and a few features, and loses on others. Details below.

The Index and custom prompts are different jobs
It is worth being precise here, because many comparisons, including some of our own older posts, treat “Brand Radar” as one price.
The AI Visibility Index answers “how visible is a brand across the whole market?” Ahrefs takes real queries from its keyword database and expands them into natural questions through People Also Ask and semantic fan-out. It then runs those prompts through each AI platform and stores every response. Its methodology page lists approximate monthly volumes:
- about 14.5 million prompts each for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini
- about 13.3 million for Copilot
- about 282 million for Google AI Overviews
- about 24 million for AI Mode
You can search any brand or category instantly, see competitors’ share of voice, and go back to historical responses from 2025. Because every prompt traces back to a keyword, Ahrefs can weight mentions by search volume. It calls the result Estimated Impressions, and it is candid that this is “a modeling choice, not a measured relationship”.
Custom prompts answer “how do we do on the questions our buyers ask?” You write or generate the prompts, choose platforms and cadence, and data accumulates from the day you start. This is the job RankBits does. Ahrefs itself says the Index “works best for established brands or topics with meaningful search demand”. For a niche B2B product, or one that is too new to appear in keyword data, custom prompts are the part that matters.
If you need the Index, this comparison mostly doesn't apply to you. Ask yourself whether you need market-wide AI share of voice, history back to 2025, AI visibility tied to search volume, or the ability to research competitors without setting up prompts. If so, Ahrefs sells something RankBits does not, and you should judge the $199–$699 against that. The rest of this article is mainly about custom prompt tracking.
Engine coverage
- Claude costs 8× more on Ahrefs. Ahrefs’ pricing page states that “Claude consumes 8 checks per update”, and Claude is available for custom prompts only. On RankBits, a Claude answer costs one response, the same as any other engine. Claude Paid, a paid-tier model, is available on Pro.
- Grok. Ahrefs’ help centre says that “following recent policy changes by Grok, we are temporarily unable to gather new data.” RankBits tracks Grok from Starter. Our paid-tier SuperGrok is paused on our side at the time of writing, which is why Pro currently runs 17 engines and sources, not the 18 listed on our pricing page.
- Paid-tier models. Ahrefs collects answers from the free web versions using each platform’s default model. RankBits Pro adds separate paid-tier variants of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. These run stronger models and often name different brands, which matters if your buyers pay for these tools.
- Supporting data. Ahrefs connects AI visibility to the rest of Ahrefs: keyword volumes, backlinks and rankings, plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit source tracking (in beta, for Ahrefs customers). RankBits instead checks Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo results for each tracked prompt, and the Tavily and Exa search APIs that many AI agents call behind the scenes.
How each tool captures an answer
This is an advantage for Ahrefs, and we want to state it plainly.
Ahrefs uses the consumer web apps. According to its help centre, prompts are entered into “the web version of each AI chatbot using the default model”, with “no normalization, personalization, pre-prompting, or filtering”. Its methodology page says all prompts run “through the free, publicly available web interfaces”. That is close to what a logged-out user would see. The exception is Claude, which Ahrefs collects through Anthropic’s API with web search.
RankBits uses two methods.
- ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok are queried through each vendor’s developer API with web search switched on. We instruct the model to answer the way an AI search result would.
- Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Bing Copilot and the classic search engines come from a live search-results data API, so those results are real production results.
For the chat assistants, an API answer can differ from what the consumer app shows. The app adds memory, model routing and its own interface-level retrieval. We chose APIs because they are reproducible, they let us track paid-tier models separately, and they keep costs low enough for a free plan. But if you need “what the free ChatGPT web app says, in this country”, Ahrefs’ method answers that more directly.
When a prompt’s result flips compared with the previous run, for example from mentioned to not mentioned, RankBits re-asks the engine up to twice more and keeps the majority answer before recording a change. Ahrefs, for its part, notes that it does not filter hallucinated or malformed links, “as they reflect real model output”, and that its metrics are “directional indicators, not exact traffic counts”. Both tools are measuring something non-deterministic, and both say so.
Pricing: closer than you would expect
At entry level, the two price lists are almost identical. Ahrefs’ Basic package is $50 for 2,500 checks and RankBits Starter is $49 for 2,400 responses, both about two cents per answer. Ahrefs’ larger packages then get cheaper per check: $14.29 per 1,000 on Growth and $10 per 1,000 on Scale. RankBits stays at about $20 per 1,000 on Pro.
Here is the same work priced on both tools, using only the engines both tools track:
Full arithmetic behind the chart
Shared engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, plus Microsoft Copilot where six are used. One location. Monthly prices, before tax. Weekly tracking = 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 runs a month, and daily = 30. For Ahrefs we used the cheapest package-plus-overage combination, which is the most favourable case for Ahrefs.
- 1 brand, 20 prompts, weekly, 5 engines: 20 × 5 × 4.33 ≈ 433 answers. Ahrefs Basic, 2,500 checks: $50. RankBits Starter, 2,400 responses: $49. Starter is needed because Free has 5 prompts and doesn't include AI Mode or Gemini.
- 1 brand, 50 prompts, daily, 6 engines: 50 × 6 × 30 = 9,000 answers. Ahrefs Growth: $100 for 7,000, plus 2,000 × $0.015 = $130. RankBits Pro: $99 plus 4,000 credits at $106 = $205.
- 10 brands, 20 prompts each, weekly, 6 engines: 10 × 20 × 6 × 4.33 ≈ 5,200 answers. Ahrefs Growth: $100. RankBits Pro: $99 in months with four weekly runs, or $129 with a $30 block of 1,000 credits in five-run months. Leftover credits carry over.
- 10 brands, 50 prompts each, weekly, 6 engines: ≈ 13,000 answers. Ahrefs Growth: $100 plus 6,000 × $0.015 = $190. RankBits Pro: $99 plus 8,000 credits at $183 = $282.
Adding Claude. Each Claude answer costs 8 checks on Ahrefs. Tracking 20 prompts weekly on Claude alone is 20 × 4.33 × 8 ≈ 693 checks on Ahrefs, against about 87 responses on RankBits. Daily Claude tracking of 50 prompts is 12,000 checks on Ahrefs ($175 on Growth with overage) against 1,500 responses on RankBits.
Already an Ahrefs customer? Lite ($129/mo), Standard ($249/mo) and Advanced ($449/mo) include 150, 300 and 600 custom-prompt checks a month. That is 5, 10 or 20 prompts tracked daily on one platform at no extra cost. Ahrefs says annual billing saves up to 17%. RankBits currently has no annual discount.
So for custom prompt tracking, the numbers don’t support a claim that RankBits is cheaper than Ahrefs. At small scale the two cost the same, and at volume Ahrefs is cheaper. The places where RankBits saves money are narrower:
- $0 to start. The Free plan tracks one brand on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Google Search and Bing every week, forever. Ahrefs has no free Brand Radar tier for ongoing tracking.
- Claude. One response per Claude answer instead of 8 checks. If Claude matters to your buyers, which is common in tech and B2B, this changes the arithmetic quickly.
- The Index you might be sold but don’t need. If your goal is to track your own prompts, $50–$250 in Ahrefs packages, or $49–$99 on RankBits, covers it. The $199–$699 Index is only worth paying for if you will actually use market-wide research.
- White-label without an agency stack. RankBits Pro ($99/mo) puts your own logo, colours and contact details on PDF, Excel and CSV exports.
Where Ahrefs Brand Radar genuinely wins
If you read only one section to judge how far to trust this article, read this one.
- The AI Visibility Index. It covers 525 million+ prompts, any brand, no setup, history back to 2025, and share of voice across a whole category. Nothing in RankBits is comparable.
- Connection to search demand. Every Index prompt traces back to a real keyword, so AI visibility can be weighted by search volume and grouped into topics. RankBits has no keyword database. Our action plan uses AI-estimated volumes, which are estimates rather than measurements.
- The rest of Ahrefs. Keywords, backlinks, rank tracking, Site Audit, web and AI-bot analytics, and a Looker Studio connector on the Advanced plan. For an SEO team already in Ahrefs, Brand Radar sits next to everything else they use.
- Consumer web-app capture. Answers come from the free web interfaces with the default model and no personalisation, closer to what users see than our API approach for chat assistants.
- Price at volume. Custom prompts cost $10–$15 per 1,000 checks on the Growth and Scale packages, cheaper than RankBits.
- Locations. Custom prompts can be tracked per country, with each location counted as a check. RankBits has no country targeting.
- Sources beyond the web. YouTube, TikTok and Reddit tracking (in beta, for Ahrefs customers) shows which community content shapes AI answers.
- Teams and vendor scale. Ahrefs plans add extra users ($40–$100/mo each) and offer SSO on Enterprise. Ahrefs says more than 3,000 companies use Brand Radar. It is an established company with years of public reviews. RankBits is small, bootstrapped and new.
Where RankBits genuinely wins
- A free plan that doesn’t expire. Track one brand weekly for $0. You can also run a one-off check with no account using the free AI visibility checker.
- Claude at the normal price, plus Claude Paid. One response per Claude answer, against 8 checks on Ahrefs.
- Grok and paid-tier models. Grok is tracked from Starter, while Ahrefs’ Grok collection is paused. Paid-tier ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are tracked on Pro.
- Classic search and agent search for every prompt. Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo results, plus the Tavily and Exa search APIs, so you can see where AI agents are likely to find sources, not only where chat apps cite them.
- White-label exports at $99. Pro lets you brand PDF, Excel and CSV reports with your logo, company name, accent colour, website and contact email. The files drop the RankBits name, so you can send them to clients as your own.
- API and MCP on every plan. Including Free, after email verification, with no separate Ahrefs plan or API-unit budget to manage.
- From finding to fix in one place. Every answer that names your brand gets a sentiment label and is checked against your own website for factual errors, such as wrong pricing or features. Pro adds an action plan that ranks the prompts where you are invisible. RankBits can then draft an article for a recommendation; each draft uses 5 responses, and paid plans get the full text.
- “Run now”. On Starter and Pro you can re-run a scan on demand, for example right after you publish a page.
Honest limitations of RankBits
RankBits is a young, bootstrapped tool. Most of the gaps below are areas where Ahrefs is strong.
- No market-wide index. We only know about the prompts you track. We can’t tell you a competitor’s AI visibility across millions of prompts, or what it was in 2025.
- No keyword or SEO data. No search volumes, backlinks or rankings beyond the search results we check for your own prompts.
- API capture for chat assistants. Our ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok results come from developer APIs, not the consumer web apps.
- More expensive at volume. Beyond a few thousand answers a month, Ahrefs’ Growth and Scale packages cost less per answer than RankBits Pro plus credits.
- No country targeting, and one login per account.
- The response allowance is the ceiling. Pro’s brand count is unlimited, but its 5,000 responses are not. Daily tracking of 50 prompts on 6 engines needs 9,000 responses a month. Plan your prompt and engine counts deliberately, or budget for credits.
- No public review history yet. That is a fair reason for caution.
Who should buy which
| Choose Ahrefs Brand Radar if… | Choose RankBits if… |
|---|---|
| You want market-wide AI visibility research and competitor benchmarks with no setup | You want to track your own prompts and start at $0 |
| You already pay for Ahrefs and want AI visibility next to your SEO data | Claude matters to your buyers and you don't want to pay 8 checks per answer |
| You track thousands of prompts and want the lowest price per check | You need Grok or paid-tier ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude |
| You need answers from the consumer web apps, per country | You want white-label client exports and an API on a $99 plan |
| You need multiple users, SSO or an established vendor | You want sentiment checks, factual-error checks and article drafts built into your tracking |
Bottom line
Ahrefs Brand Radar’s headline product, the AI Visibility Index, is something RankBits doesn’t offer. If you need market-wide research tied to search demand, it is worth its $199–$699, and we would not try to talk you out of it.
For the job RankBits does, tracking the prompts your buyers actually ask, Ahrefs’ custom prompt packages are priced about the same as RankBits at small scale and cheaper at volume. RankBits makes sense if you want to:
- start free
- track Claude without an 8× multiplier
- cover Grok and paid-tier models
- get classic search and agent search checks for every prompt
- send white-label reports to clients on a $99 plan
Before you buy either, write down the prompts and engines you actually need, then do the arithmetic on both price lists. That will tell you more than either vendor’s marketing.
